Rare 43-Inch Sony CRT TV Rescued From Japanese Restaurant Demolition

Retro gaming enthusiast Shank Mods saved one of the last Sony Trinitron KX-45ED1 units, the world’s largest CRT TV, from destruction at a noodle restaurant in Osaka, Japan.

  • The Sony Trinitron KX-45ED1, also known as the PVM-4300, is a 43-inch CRT TV released in the late 1980s and is considered the largest consumer CRT ever made.
  • The TV was originally located in a 300-year-old Osaka noodle restaurant that was set to be demolished due to earthquake safety concerns.
  • Shank Mods, a retro gaming enthusiast, coordinated the rescue effort through social media, enlisting the help of local volunteers in Japan to confirm and secure the TV's condition.
  • The 440-pound TV, along with its 170-pound stand, was carefully removed, shipped to the United States, and restored, requiring significant repairs to its convergence amplifier circuit.
  • The TV is now functional and will be shared with the retro gaming community, offering a lag-free experience for vintage consoles.
