Rare Script of Jean-Luc Godard's 'Breathless' to Be Auctioned

The only known manuscript, featuring Godard's handwritten notes, will be sold online by Sotheby's in June 2025, alongside other memorabilia from the producer's estate.

The script, discovered in producer Georges de Beauregard's estate, includes 70 pages of handwritten notes by Jean-Luc Godard.
It provides rare insights into Godard's improvisational filmmaking process, including his tendency to write dialogue shortly before shooting.
The auction, hosted by Sotheby’s, will take place online between June 14 and June 18, 2025.
The lot is estimated to sell for £350,000-£500,000 and will include additional memorabilia such as photographs, letters, and a vintage contact sheet.
The rediscovery highlights the cultural and historical significance of 'Breathless' as a cornerstone of the French New Wave movement.
