Overview

  • The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, is now enforced at TSA checkpoints after years of delays, with 81% of travelers already compliant.
  • Non-compliant travelers can still fly but may face extra screening or be directed to separate lines at airports.
  • Acceptable alternatives to a REAL ID include passports, green cards, military IDs, and DHS trusted traveler cards like Global Entry.
  • DMVs across the U.S. report long lines and backlogs as residents rush to obtain REAL IDs before the enforcement date.
  • State compliance rates vary significantly, with some states like Colorado exceeding 90% while others, such as New Jersey, lag far behind at 17%.
