Reliance Power and Bhutan’s DHI Finalize Agreement for Nation’s Largest Solar Plant

The 500 MW solar project, valued at Rs 2,000 crore, marks Bhutan’s largest private sector FDI and advances South Asia’s clean energy integration.

Overview

  • Reliance Power has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Green Digital, owned by Bhutan’s Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), to jointly develop a 500 MW solar plant.
  • The project represents the largest solar installation in Bhutan and the largest private sector foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country’s solar energy sector to date.
  • With a capital outlay of Rs 2,000 crore, the project will operate under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and be implemented in phased tranches over the next 24 months.
  • Reliance Power has initiated the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) tendering process and is collaborating with financial institutions to secure long-tenor project financing.
  • This initiative aims to diversify Bhutan’s renewable energy mix beyond hydropower, enhance grid stability, and foster regional clean energy integration across South Asia.
