Rohingya Refugees in Sri Lanka Protest Against Planned U.N. Office Closure

Refugees fear loss of living allowance and seek resettlement in another country as Sri Lanka does not allow permanent residency.

  • Rohingya refugees in Sri Lanka, most of whom were rescued at sea while trying to reach Indonesia from Bangladesh, are protesting against the planned closure of the U.N. refugee agency's office in the country.
  • The refugees fear they will lose their living allowance provided by the U.N. agency once the office closes at the end of the year.
  • The refugees are also seeking resettlement in another country as Sri Lanka does not allow them to live there permanently.
  • The refugees receive basic allowance and limited healthcare from the U.N. agency and the Sri Lankan government respectively, but the children don't receive education and adults aren't allowed to work.
  • The refugees have submitted a petition to the U.N. agency's representative pleading for help to find a permanent solution in another country that will not make them and their children permanently stateless.
