The suspension came at 1:15 p.m. local time as thunderstorms and lightning moved into the Ponte Vedra Beach area, halting play for the day.
J.J. Spaun, who held the third-round lead, is one stroke behind McIlroy at 11 under par, with Akshay Bhatia and Tom Hoge two shots back at 10 under.
Tournament officials had adjusted Sunday’s schedule to earlier tee times and groupings of three to avoid delays, but heavy rain and lightning forced a stoppage.
If play cannot resume Sunday, the final round will continue Monday under clear skies but with strong winds forecasted up to 25 mph.
