Royal Mail Fined £5.6m for Significant Failure in Meeting Delivery Targets

Regulator Ofcom Imposes Penalty After Royal Mail Misses First and Second-Class Delivery Targets and Route Completion

  • Royal Mail has been fined £5.6m by regulator Ofcom for failing to meet its first and second-class delivery targets in the 2022-23 financial year.
  • Only 73.7% of first-class mail and 90.7% of second-class mail were delivered on time, falling short of the targets of 93% and 98.5% respectively.
  • Royal Mail also fell short on completing all delivery routes, with just 89.35% completed on the required day compared to a target of 99.9%.
  • Ofcom stated that Royal Mail breached its obligations by failing to meet its targets by a significant and unexplained margin, causing considerable harm to customers.
  • Royal Mail acknowledged the decision and stated that the past year was uniquely challenging due to factors such as a long-running industrial dispute which included 18 days of strike action.
