Samsung, Google Reboot VR Headset Plans in Response to Apple's Vision Pro, Launch Pushed to End of 2024

Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm revise release plans for their collaborative XR headset to improve resolution and compete with Apple's advanced Vision Pro; initial production aims for 30,000 units.

  • Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm, having formed an alliance to create an XR headset, have decided to rework their project to improve screen resolution and compete with Apple's Vision Pro. The revised completion date for their headset is set for the end of 2024.
  • The alliance's decision to revise plans came after Apple unveiled high-spec features and a surprising 4K-per-eye (8K overall) display, made by Sony, for the Vision Pro at WWDC in June.
  • Samsung will introduce higher resolution screens, by its own Display division, and intends to match Apple's unprecedented visual quality in the Vision Pro. This move largely contributed to the delay of the headset announcement and the expected launch.
  • In the new collaboration, Samsung is responsible for designing the hardware for the XR headset, Google is developing a mixed reality version of Android, and Qualcomm will provide the underlying chip technology, likely the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Platform.
  • For 2024, the production target for the Samsung XR headset is set to be a modest 30,000 units compared to Apple, who scaled back production targets from 1 million to 400,000 units for the Vision Pro.
