Jack Vettriano, born Jack Hoggan in Methil, Fife, was found dead on Saturday in his apartment in Nice, France, at the age of 73.
His death is not being treated as suspicious, according to statements from his publicist.
Vettriano rose to prominence as a self-taught artist, with his breakthrough coming in 1998 when two of his works sold on the first day of a Royal Scottish Academy exhibition.
His 1992 painting 'The Singing Butler,' depicting a couple dancing on a windswept beach, became a cultural icon and sold at auction in 2004 for £744,800.
Despite controversies and personal struggles, Vettriano's evocative works gained international acclaim, with collectors including Jack Nicholson and Sir Alex Ferguson.
