Severe Cold Forces School Closures and Delays Across Ohio

The National Weather Service's wind chill advisory prompts districts to prioritize student safety, with temperatures feeling as low as minus-16 degrees.

  • School districts across Northeast and Central Ohio, including Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Columbus City Schools, have cancelled or delayed classes due to dangerously cold temperatures.
  • The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for much of Northeast Ohio, with forecasts predicting temperatures of about 5 to 6 degrees during the time children usually wait for bus pickup or walk to school, but wind chills will make it feel like minus-16.
  • The advisory is in effect until noon Wednesday, with temperatures expected to climb into the low 20s later in the day, but it will remain windy throughout the day, with gusts up to 31 mph.
  • More than 20 central Ohio school districts have announced school closures or delays for Wednesday, Jan. 17, due to the cold temperatures.
  • Columbus City Schools are closed Wednesday for students, but it's because of a scheduled staff records day and not the cold weather.
