Severe Weather Conditions Persist in Eastern India with Orange Alert for Kolkata

Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds are forecasted in Kolkata and surrounding regions, while heatwave conditions continue in parts of Odisha.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) in Kolkata and nearby areas until March 22, 2025.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across West Bengal, including Kolkata, with isolated lighter showers in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on March 20 and 21.
An Orange alert has been issued for Kolkata on March 21, warning of potential impacts on urban infrastructure, crops, and traffic due to severe weather.
The weather conditions are driven by an anti-cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and a trough extending from Odisha to Vidarbha.
Meanwhile, heatwave-like conditions are ongoing in several districts of Odisha, prompting government advisories for public safety and preparedness.
