Shanghai Teens Detained After Filming Themselves Urinating in Hotpot at Popular Restaurant Chain

The viral video has led to public outrage, legal action, and compensation for thousands of affected customers.

Two 17-year-old migrant workers urinated into a hotpot at a Haidilao restaurant in Shanghai while intoxicated, filming and posting the act online.
The incident occurred on February 24 in a private dining room and was reported to authorities four days later by the restaurant.
Shanghai police detained the teenagers on March 8, citing their disruptive and unsanitary behavior as well as the public health concerns it raised.
Haidilao, a major hotpot chain with over 1,000 locations worldwide, replaced all utensils at the affected branch and assured customers of enhanced hygiene measures.
The restaurant offered full refunds and compensation to approximately 4,000 customers who dined at the location between February 24 and March 8.
