South Carolina Deputy Fired and Charged After Bodycam Footage Shows Him Punching Suspect Unconscious

James H. Carter's lawyer argues the deputy had to make a split second decision to protect himself and others, while the suspect's attorney calls for further investigation of the Charleston Sheriff’s Office.

Charleston County Sheriff's Department released body cam footage showing deputy James H. Carter punching suspect Rashard Keithan Duncan unconscious during a chase.
Carter was terminated on Nov. 9 and charged with third degree assault and battery, as well as misconduct in office.
Carter's lawyer argued that there was no racist component to the arrest and that Carter had to make a split second decision to protect himself and others.
Duncan was charged with resisting arrest, failure to stop for law enforcement, possessing cocaine, and reckless driving in connection to the incident.
Duncan's attorney, Marvin Pendarvis, called the evidence egregious and called for further investigation of the Charleston Sheriff’s Office.
