South Carolina Schedules First Execution in Over 13 Years

Freddie Eugene Owens to choose between lethal injection, electrocution, or firing squad for September execution.

Freddie Eugene Owens was convicted of a 1997 murder and has been on death row since 1999.
Owens also killed his cellmate in 1999, following his initial conviction.
The state struggled to obtain lethal injection drugs, leading to a 13-year pause in executions.
A 2023 law allows South Carolina to keep lethal injection drug suppliers confidential.
Owens has until early September to select his method of execution or the state will default to the electric chair.
