The Hong Kong Journalists Association expressed deep concern for Chan's safety and requested more information from the SCMP.
SCMP stated that Chan has taken personal leave and that her family informed them she is in Beijing handling a private matter.
Chan's family has assured SCMP that she is safe but asked for her privacy to be respected.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesman claimed ignorance about the situation when asked about Chan's case.
