Southwest Airlines Fined Record $140 Million for 2022 Holiday Chaos
Airline to Establish $90 Million Fund for Future Passengers Impacted by Delays and Cancellations
- Southwest Airlines has been fined a record $140 million by the U.S. Department of Transportation for numerous violations of consumer protection laws during the 2022 holiday season.
- The fine comes on top of the $600 million Southwest already agreed to disburse for refunds and reimbursements to customers.
- As part of the settlement, Southwest is required to set up a $90 million fund for future passengers impacted by notable delays and cancellations.
- Southwest passengers could be entitled to a voucher worth $75 or more if their flight is canceled or they arrive at their destination at least three hours late as a result of Southwest’s actions.
- The new policy, which both the company and the Transportation Department described as “industry-leading,” goes into effect on April 30, 2024.
