Stolen Artworks from MLK Memorial in Denver Recovered

Police seek suspects after bronze pieces sold as scrap metal; theft not considered bias-motivated.

  • Three bronze artworks and seven additional pieces from a nearby fountain, stolen from Denver's Martin Luther King Jr. memorial, have been recovered after being sold as scrap metal.
  • Denver Police are seeking two suspects in connection with the theft, with one identified as 67-year-old Herman Duran.
  • The thefts, initially investigated as bias-motivated, are now believed not to be bias-related as the items were sold as scrap.
  • A large plaque depicting Black military veterans and other significant pieces were among the items recovered.
  • The recovered artworks have been returned to Denver Arts & Venues, which manages the monuments.
