Swiss Prosecutors Close Criminal Proceedings Against FIFA President Gianni Infantino

Probe into secret meetings with Switzerland's former attorney general closed after three years, with investigators finding no evidence of wrongdoing by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

  • The Swiss Federal Prosecutors have closed a three-year investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino's secret meetings with former attorney general Michael Lauber and federal prosecutor Rinaldo Arnold, finding no evidence of wrongdoing.
  • Infantino hailed the decision as a vindication of the new FIFA, calling it a 'full and clear victory for me, for the new Fifa and for justice'. Infantino was elected in 2016 to clean up FIFA after it became embroiled in corruption scandals.
  • The case against Infantino was launched in 2020 on suspicions of secrecy violations, abuse of office and aiding and abetting related to his meetings with Lauber. These suspicions were discarded by the prosecutors upon the completion of their investigation.
  • Lauber, who had resigned as the Swiss attorney general following a court judgment that he had covered up a meeting with Infantino and lied to supervisors while his office investigated corruption at FIFA, was also involved in this case.
  • FIFA responded to the closure of proceedings against Infantino with extreme satisfaction, stating that 'the new FIFA is today a clean, well-run and robust organization which operates in accordance with the highest ethical and governance standards'.
