Telangana Implements ₹10–₹40 Liquor Price Hike to Boost Revenue

The state expects an additional ₹150–170 crore monthly revenue from increased excise cess on over 2,000 liquor brands, while low-cost options remain unaffected.

As per the new rates, a 180 ml quarter bottle of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and foreign liquor brands will cost ₹10 more, while the cost of a 350 ml half-bottle has gone up by a ₹20 hike, and that of a 750ml full bottle by ₹40. (Pic used for representation)

Overview

  • The Telangana government raised liquor prices effective May 19, 2025, by ₹10 for quarter bottles, ₹20 for half bottles, and ₹40 for full bottles.
  • The price hike applies to over 2,000 brands through an increased special excise cess, leaving base prices unchanged and dealers' margins unaffected.
  • Low-cost ordinary liquors and ready-to-drink options, such as wine, beer, and breezers, are exempt from the new pricing structure.
  • The state anticipates generating an additional ₹150–170 crore in monthly revenue, contributing to its projected ₹27,623 crore excise revenue for 2025-26.
  • Despite the increase, Telangana's liquor prices remain significantly higher than those in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, which also raised IMFL taxes earlier this year.
