Tensions Persist in Manipur's Churachandpur After Fatal Ethnic Clashes

A joint peace committee has been formed as curfews and shutdowns continue following violence between Hmar and Zomi communities.

Clashes erupted in Churachandpur on March 19, 2025, after an attempt to remove a Zomi militant group’s flag, resulting in the death of Lalropui Pakhumate, 53.
The violence followed a peace settlement reached on March 18 addressing the March 16 assault on Hmar leader Richard Laltanpuia Hmar.
Schools, shops, and businesses remain closed under a curfew, while security forces conduct flag marches to maintain order.
Twelve tribal organizations, including Hmar and Zomi groups, have formed a joint peace committee to monitor tensions and prevent further violence.
Church leaders, civil society groups, and local MLAs are actively working to mediate and restore peace in the region.
