Texas Police Officer Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop; Suspect Arrested

Officer Jacob Candanoza, 28, was killed in Terrell, Texas, just months after joining the force, with a suspect now in custody following a manhunt.

Officer Jacob Candanoza was fatally shot on Sunday night during a traffic stop in Terrell, Texas, approximately 30 miles east of Dallas.
The 28-year-old officer had joined the Terrell Police Department in July 2024 and previously served in the Marines and Dallas County Sheriff's Office.
Candanoza called for backup during the stop but was shot before additional units could arrive; he later died at the hospital from his injuries.
The suspect, a 25-year-old man from Mississippi, was apprehended early Monday at an RV park in Canton, Texas, using information Candanoza relayed before his death.
Candanoza is survived by his wife and young child, and tributes have poured in from officials, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
