The move comes five months after the outlet's first-ever layoffs, which took staff and industry observers by surprise.
About 90% of staff have signed union authorization cards, and organizers have asked the Tribune's management to voluntarily recognize the union.
CEO Sonal Shah responded to the request, stating that the Tribune would respect the employees' decision and start working through the details of the request.
The union aims to preserve the collaborative work environment at the Tribune and give employees a voice in the organization's future.
