Thames Water's Sewage Dumping in Rivers Increases Five-Fold

London's Mayor Sadiq Khan criticizes the company and the government, while Thames Water plans a £2.5 billion investment for improvements.

  • Sewage dumped into rivers by Thames Water increased five-fold last year, with the company releasing sewage into London’s waterways for 6,590 hours, 11 minutes and 54 seconds between April and December 2023.
  • In just six days, between 25 Dec and 31 Dec 2023, sewage was dumped across the Thames Water network for 128 hours and 12 minutes – equivalent to 18 hours every day.
  • London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has written to Chris Weston, the chief executive of Thames Water, warning him about the state of the city’s rivers and criticizing the Government for “standing by” while more sewage flows into rivers around the country.
  • Thames Water, which serves 15 million customers across London and the south-east of England, is aiming to raise £2.5 billion by 2030 to shore up its finances and improve its leaky pipes.
  • Thames Water said its £4.5bn Thames Tideway Tunnel, aimed at capturing untreated sewage that is entering the river, is nearing completion.
