The Ur-Quan Masters Returns to Steam as Free Stars Next Week

After more than two decades, the beloved sci-fi adventure game makes its comeback, now free and updated for modern audiences.

  • The Ur-Quan Masters, originally known as Star Control 2, is set to be released on Steam for free on February 19, under the new title Free Stars: The Ur-Quan Masters.
  • Developed by the original creators, Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford, the game has been updated with modern graphics and gameplay mechanics while retaining its classic charm.
  • The release follows a complicated legal history, including a trademark infringement lawsuit with Stardock, which has been amicably settled, allowing the continuation of the Ur-Quan Masters series.
  • Pistol Shrimp, the studio founded by Reiche, Ford, and others, is also working on a direct sequel, Free Stars: Children of Infinity, continuing the story of humanity's struggle for survival among the stars.
  • The game features exploration, resource collection, fleet building, and combat, offering players an immersive open-world experience in the galaxy.
