Tiny Winged 'Dragons' Once Glided Through Ancient England

New Research Reveals Diverse Reptilian Life on Subtropical Island 200 Million Years Ago

  • Researchers at the University of Bristol have discovered that small, winged reptiles known as Kuehneosaurs once lived on an ancient subtropical island near modern-day South West England.
  • The Kuehneosaurs, which resembled tiny dragons, were small enough to fit in your hand and were relatives of modern crocodiles and dinosaurs.
  • The creatures had wings made of skin stretched across their elongated side ribs, allowing them to glide short distances from the treetops where they resided.
  • Along with Kuehneosaurs, several other varieties of ancient reptiles were also discovered, including a variety of lizard-like trilophosaurs and an aquatic species that lived similarly to modern otters.
  • The fossils were collected from limestone quarries in the area, revealing what the island’s ancient reptilian residents were like.
