Tolkien Estate Wins Copyright Lawsuit Against Fan Fiction Writer
Demetrious Polychron, who published his own sequel to The Lord of the Rings, is ordered to destroy all copies and pay $134,000 in legal fees.
- Demetrious Polychron, a fan fiction writer, has been sued by the estate of JRR Tolkien for copyright infringement after publishing his own sequel to The Lord of the Rings.
- Polychron had initially sued the Tolkien estate and Amazon, claiming their TV series, Rings of Power, infringed the copyright of his book, The Fellowship of the King.
- The court dismissed Polychron's lawsuit, ruling that his book was infringing on Amazon's prequel, and the Tolkien Estate then filed a separate lawsuit against Polychron.
- The court granted a permanent injunction against Polychron, preventing him from selling his book and any other planned sequels, and ordered him to destroy all physical and electronic copies of the book.
- The court also awarded lawyer's fees totalling $134,000 (£106,000) to the Tolkien Estate and Amazon in connection with Polychron's lawsuit.
