Top Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer promoted to Double A after strong start to season

Marcelo Mayer, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 draft, has rapidly climbed through the Red Sox minor league system this year.
Mayer, 19,will be the youngest Red Sox draftee to reach Double A since 2009 after his promotion from High A Greenville to Double A Portland.
In 35 games for Greenville this season, Mayer hit .290 with 7 home runs and 19 extra-base hits, showcasing his potential as a future middle-of-the-order bat.
Mayer is also a gifted defensive shortstop and could push for a spot in the Red Sox lineup as early as next season if he continues to develop at his current pace.
The Sea Dogs will welcome Mayer to the lineup for their upcoming series against the Somerset Patriots in New Jersey this week.
