Trevor Denman, Legendary Horse Racing Announcer, Retires After 40-Year Career

Trevor Denman, 72, officially announced his retirement after more than four decades as one of horse racing's most celebrated voices.
Denman’s career began in South Africa in 1971 before he became a staple in Southern California horse racing in the 1980s, calling races at Del Mar, Santa Anita, and Hollywood Park.
He was renowned for his distinctive, descriptive style, coining memorable phrases like 'And away they go' and 'They would have to sprout wings.'
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s CEO, Joe Harper, expressed gratitude for Denman’s contributions, calling him 'the best in the business.'
Larry Collmus, known for his NBC calls of the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup, will succeed Denman as the full-time announcer at Del Mar.
