Trump Open to GOP Debates if Race Tightens, Eager to Face Biden

Despite legal challenges and leading in polls, former president shows willingness to engage in debates if competition intensifies.

  • Donald Trump, the former president and current front-runner for the Republican nomination, has indicated his willingness to participate in the GOP debates if the race becomes 'very close' after the New Hampshire primary.
  • Despite recent indictments and a ruling disqualifying him from the presidency due to 14th Amendment violations, Trump is leading in the polls with 62%, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 11.9% and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley at 10.8%.
  • Trump has also expressed eagerness to debate President Joe Biden in the general election, even if the debates are organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates, which he has previously criticized.
  • The Republican National Committee had unanimously voted to withdraw from the commission’s events, alleging bias, but Trump never signed the pledge.
  • There are three more GOP debates scheduled for next month, two hosted by CNN on Jan. 10 and 21, and one hosted by ABC News on Jan. 18.
