Tunisian Man Arrested and Charged in Connection with Brussels Terrorist Attack

The 44-year-old Tunisian is said to possibly be linked to the weapon used in the attack, which targeted Swedish soccer fans, leading to heightened security tensions as Belgium faces criticism over handling of the case and the resignation of Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne.

  • A 44-year-old Tunisian man was arrested by Belgian authorities in relation to the killing of two Swedish soccer fans in Brussels. He is accused of terrorist murder, attempted terrorist murder, and participation in a terrorist organization, and may possibly be linked to the weapon used in the attack.
  • The suspected shooter, Abdesalam L., was a Tunisian man who shot dead two Swedish soccer fans and wounded a third before a Belgium-Sweden international football match. He was shot dead by the police a day after the attack. He identified himself as a member of the so-called Islamic State before he was shot.
  • Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne resigned after it was revealed that authorities failed to deport the shooter in spite of Tunisia seeking his extradition last year. The shooter had also spent time in prison in Sweden and had his asylum claim rejected by Belgian authorities in 2020.
  • Security tensions have escalated in Belgium, resulting in the terror alert level being raised to the second-highest level. This comes on the eve of a two-day European Union summit in Brussels, where leaders will discuss, among other things, the Israel-Hamas war.
  • Authorities are also 'actively' searching for an asylum-seeker of Palestinian origin following media reports that he had threatened an unspecified attack.
