A migrant died early Thursday after being rescued unconscious from an overloaded boat traveling from Dunkirk toward the UK, despite medical efforts to revive them.
The boat initially carried around 40 people but picked up additional passengers near Gravelines, increasing the total to approximately 80 migrants still on board.
French coastguard rescued 15 people, including three pulled from the water, and continues to monitor the vessel as it heads toward the UK.
A separate incident on Wednesday resulted in another migrant death near Equihen-Plage, bringing the total number of Channel-related deaths recorded by French authorities this year to four.
The Dunkirk public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the recent incidents, highlighting the growing risks associated with these perilous crossings.
