Two Skiers Killed in Separate Alberta Avalanches

Unrelated avalanches in Lake Louise and Kananaskis backcountry claimed lives on Friday as rescue efforts concluded.

  • One skier died after triggering an avalanche while skiing out of bounds near Lake Louise Ski Resort, where they were buried under two meters of snow.
  • The second skier in the Lake Louise incident managed to extricate the victim and perform first aid, but the individual was later pronounced dead by emergency services.
  • A separate avalanche in Kananaskis Country's Black Prince day-use area also resulted in the death of another skier on Friday afternoon.
  • The Lake Louise Ski Resort has been closed, and RCMP confirmed all other guests have been accounted for following search and rescue efforts.
  • Avalanche Canada reported that recent heavy snowfall and unstable conditions likely contributed to the incidents, with investigations ongoing.
