UCLA Acquires Former Westside Pavilion for New Research Park
State-funded project to house centers for immunology and quantum science research, with potential for lecture halls and performance spaces.
- UCLA has acquired the former Westside Pavilion shopping mall, which will be transformed into the UCLA Research Park, housing two multidisciplinary research centers focusing on immunology and quantum science.
- The purchase was made possible in part by a $500 million investment from the state of California, with $200 million already allocated.
- The former mall, located two miles from the UCLA campus, was previously owned by Hudson Pacific Properties Inc. and Macerich, and was sold to the Regents of the University of California for $700 million.
- Google, which had previously leased part of the property and planned to use it for office space, assisted in UCLA's acquisition.
- The former mall's 12-screen multiplex movie theater may be converted into lecture halls or performance spaces, offering programming across the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences.
