UK Population Projected to Reach 73.7 Million by 2036

Net migration expected to contribute to nearly 10% population increase, hitting 70 million by 2026.

  • UK's population is projected to increase by nearly 10% to 73.7 million by 2036, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
  • Net migration is expected to account for 6.1 million of the increase, with the remainder coming from a higher number of births than deaths.
  • The projections assume a level of long-term net international migration of 315,000 a year from mid-2028 onwards.
  • The population could hit 70 million by mid-2026, a decade earlier than previously projected.
  • The size of the UK population aged 85 and over could grow from 1.6 million to 2.6 million in the next 15 years.
