Overview

  • Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate claims it infiltrated Tupolev’s network and stole 4.4 gigabytes of classified data on Russia’s strategic bombers.
  • Stolen files include personal records of personnel, internal management communications, procurement documents, engineer résumés and minutes of closed meetings.
  • Hackers defaced Tupolev’s official website with an owl graphic clutching a bomber and redirected visitors to the United Aircraft Corporation homepage.
  • The cyberattack came after Ukraine’s Security Service used FPV drones in a raid on four Russian airfields targeting 41 warplanes, including A-50 surveillance and Tu-160, Tu-22 and Tu-95 bombers.
  • President Putin has vowed retaliation for the combined cyber and drone operations, raising the prospect of further escalation.
