University of Duisburg-Essen Bribery Scandal: Grade Manipulation Trial Begins

Two defendants admit to manipulating grades for money, exploiting IT system vulnerabilities and earning nearly €120,000.

A former employee and a former student are on trial for a grade manipulation scheme at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 2017 to 2021.
The accused altered nearly 200 grade entries for at least 40 students in exchange for bribes ranging from €500 to €900 per grade change.
The scheme exploited weaknesses in the university's IT system, raising concerns about institutional oversight and security.
Both defendants confessed to their roles during the trial and expressed remorse for their actions.
The trial at the Essen Regional Court is scheduled to continue with six more hearings, concluding by April 30, 2025.
