Unprecedented Cicada Emergence Expected in Spring 2024

Over a Trillion Cicadas from Two Broods to Emerge Simultaneously for the First Time in 221 Years

  • More than a trillion cicadas, from two different broods, are expected to emerge in 17 states across the U.S. in spring 2024, marking the first simultaneous emergence of these groups in 221 years.
  • The two broods, XIX and XIII, last emerged in 2011 and 2007 respectively. This year, they are expected to overlap geographically in Illinois and Indiana.
  • Brood XIX, the largest of all periodical cicada broods, has records along the east coast from Maryland to Georgia and in the Midwest from Iowa to Oklahoma. Brood XIII is set to emerge in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and possibly Michigan.
  • The emergence is expected to take place in the middle of May and end in June. When they emerge, the noise level can reach up to 105 decibels.
  • Cicadas are not poisonous and do not bite or sting. They are largely harmless to humans and animals, although their exoskeleton can be difficult for some animals to digest.
