The attack occurred two hours into the flight from San Francisco to Dulles International Airport and lasted about a minute.
Another passenger intervened to stop the assault, and the injured passenger was treated for facial injuries by a doctor on board.
Nelson was moved to a seat near the front of the plane and monitored until the flight landed safely, where law enforcement and paramedics met the aircraft.
