U.S. charges El Chapo's sons, Mexican cartel leaders and Chinese suppliers in deadly fentanyl trafficking operation

  • The Biden administration announced charges against 28 leaders and members of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel, including three sons of notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, for running a transnational fentanyl smuggling network responsible for tens of thousands of overdose deaths in the U.S. each year.
  • The indictment details the cartel's violent tactics, including feeding rivals to tigers, and accuses Chinese and Guatemalan citizens of supplying precursor chemicals to Mexican drug labs that produce illicit fentanyl.
  • The U.S. is offering rewards of up to $56 million for information leading to the capture of 27 accused fentanyl traffickers, including up to $10 million each for two of El Chapo's sons who now help lead the violent cartel.
  • The Sinaloa Cartel is largely responsible for the fentanyl crisis in America, and the Biden administration says disrupting the global fentanyl supply chain is its "top priority."
  • Fentanyl overdoses have killed nearly 107,000 Americans over the last year, and the synthetic opioid is now the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 49.
