US Indicts Two Men, Imposes Sanctions for Supplying Drone Components to Iran

The defendants allegedly procured microelectronics for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, leading to charges of conspiracy to export U.S. goods to Iran, unlawful exportation, and international money laundering.

  • The US Department of Justice has indicted Iranian national Hossein Hatefi Ardakani and Chinese national Gary Lam for allegedly procuring microelectronics for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to be used in drone attacks.
  • The microelectronics, which include high electron mobility transistors, monolithic microwave integrated circuit power amplifiers, and analog-to-digital converters, were intended for the IRGC Aerospace Force Self Sufficiency Jihad Organization's one-way attack UAV program.
  • The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on a network of 10 entities and four individuals based in Iran, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Indonesia, led by Ardakani, for facilitating Iran’s procurement of sensitive goods, including U.S.-origin electronic components, for its drone program.
  • The defendants are charged with conspiracy to export U.S. goods to Iran and to defraud the United States, unlawfully exporting and attempting to export goods to Iran, and conspiracy to engage in international money laundering.
  • The US has also seized more than $800,000 from companies tied to the IRGC's drone program.
