US sanctions Sinaloa cartel leaders over fentanyl trafficking

The US imposed sanctions on Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of drug kingpin "El Chapo" Guzman, for overseeing fentanyl trafficking into the US.
The sanctions also targeted three other Sinaloa cartel members and two Mexican companies involved in the cartel's drug operations.
The sanctions were announced the same day the Mexican president met with President Biden to discuss the fentanyl crisis fueling record overdose deaths in the US.
The Sinaloa cartel is the primary source of fentanyl trafficked into the US, according to the DEA.
Fentanyl has caused an estimated 71,000 overdose deaths in the US in 2021.
