US State Department Accuses Russia of Orchestrating Anti-Ukraine Disinformation Campaign Across Latin America

  • The US State Department has accused the Russian government of financing a disinformation campaign in Latin America, specifically aimed at promoting Russia's strategic interests and weakening support for Ukraine and Western allies.
  • Social Design Agency and Structura have been named as key agents in the Kremlin-backed disinformation campaign, using their influence to co-opt local media and influencers in Latin America to spread propaganda and disinformation.
  • The campaign allegedly uses a large ecosystem of Russian proxy websites and local media to present the propaganda as authentic local news, with the aim of propagating anti-US and anti-NATO sentiment.
  • The State Department has identified key Spanish-language outlets involved in the scheme, including El Ciudadano and Pressenza, who receive content from Russian teams for review, editing and publication in mass media.
  • Russian embassies throughout Latin America are also being accused of coordinating efforts to distribute pro-Kremlin propaganda.
