Utah Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Terminally Ill Wife

DeWayne McCulla allegedly tried to choke his wife in hospice care to 'ease her suffering', charges filed two years after the incident.

  • Utah man DeWayne McCulla, 45, has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly trying to choke his terminally ill wife, Arenda Lee McCulla, 47, to death in front of her family while she was in hospice care in December 2021.
  • Arenda, who was suffering from terminal breast cancer that had spread to her brain, neck, lungs, and liver, died the day after the alleged incident.
  • Six family members reportedly intervened and pulled DeWayne off of Arenda when they saw her gasping for air.
  • DeWayne allegedly admitted to the act, claiming he did it to 'ease her suffering' and said he would do it again 'because he loved his wife'.
  • It is unclear why charges were filed nearly two years after the incident. If convicted, DeWayne could face up to life in prison.
