Van Brett Watkins, Accomplice in Rae Carruth Murder Plot, Dies in Prison at 63

Watkins, sentenced to over 50 years for his role in the 1999 murder of Cherica Adams, died of natural causes.

  • Van Brett Watkins, who was imprisoned for his role in the 1999 murder plot of Cherica Adams, has died at age 63.
  • Watkins was serving a sentence of more than 50 years for second-degree murder, conspiracy and other charges.
  • The murder plot was orchestrated by then-Carolina Panthers player Rae Carruth, who paid Watkins to kill his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams.
  • Adams was shot in her car and died weeks later. Her son was born by emergency Caesarean section with disabilities and was raised by Adams’ mother.
  • Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and other charges. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison and was released in 2018.
