VAR audio recordings to be released next season to increase transparency, says Webb
- Howard Webb, chief refereeing officer of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), has indicated that audio recordings of VAR deliberations could be released next season to help explain contentious decisions.
- Webb gave an in-depth demonstration of the inner workings of VAR before Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football showing of Leicester City against Liverpool on Monday.
- Webb showed video and audio recordings of interactions between on-field referees and VAR officials discussing in-game situations and making clear how they reached decisions.
- This was the first time such footage had been shown to Premier League viewers in the UK and increased access to such footage is under consideration for next season.
- FIFA does not allow live playing of such footage during the game, but there is nothing to stop showing that information later.
