Venice Introduces Entry Fee for Day Visitors
The new measure aims to control tourist numbers following UNESCO's threat to list the city as a World Heritage in Danger.
- Venice has introduced a new entry fee for day visitors as part of a trial to control the growing number of tourists crowding the city.
- The entry fee of €5 will be enforced on certain days from April 25 to mid-July, between 8:30 am and 4 pm.
- Visitors can pay the fee online and receive a QR code for access. Those caught without a ticket could face fines between €50 and €300.
- Exemptions apply to residents, students, workers, homeowners in the city, and tourists with hotel bookings. These groups will need to register for a QR code but will not be charged.
- The move comes after UNESCO threatened to add Venice to its World Heritage in Danger list due to the impact of mass tourism and climate change.
