Vizio Settles Class Action Lawsuit Over Misleading TV Refresh Rates for $3 Million

As part of the settlement, Vizio will stop advertising 'effective' refresh rates, but denies any wrongdoing and will not recall or modify existing products.

  • TV manufacturer Vizio has agreed to a $3 million settlement in a class action lawsuit that accused the company of falsely advertising the refresh rates of its TVs.
  • The lawsuit, filed in 2018, claimed that Vizio was misleading consumers by stating that certain technologies increased the 'effective refresh rate' of its TVs from 60Hz to 120Hz.
  • As part of the settlement, Vizio will cease advertising their TVs with 'effective' refresh rates.
  • Consumers who purchased a Vizio TV in California after April 30, 2014, are eligible to claim a refund, receiving between $17 and $50 depending on the number of claimants.
  • Despite the settlement, Vizio denies any wrongdoing and will not be recalling any TVs or modifying on-box advertising.
