War Survivor Bear Rehomed in Scotland
Five Sisters Zoo Launches Fundraising for New Enclosure
- Yampil, an Asiatic black bear and one of the few survivors of a bombed-out zoo in Ukraine, has been rehomed at Five Sisters Zoo in Scotland.
- The bear was discovered by Ukrainian soldiers in 2022 in the village of Yampil, after surviving the Russian invasion and harsh conditions.
- Before arriving in Scotland, Yampil was cared for by various animal welfare organizations, including Natuurhulpcentrum in Belgium and the White Rock Bear Shelter in Ukraine.
- Five Sisters Zoo has launched a fundraising campaign to build a new enclosure for Yampil, with a target of £200,000. So far, £60,000 has been raised.
- Yampil is the first Asiatic black bear that Five Sisters Zoo has cared for, and the first animal they've rescued from a war zone.
