Woman Pleads Guilty to Smuggling 29 Turtles Across Vermont-Canada Border

Wan Yee Ng attempted to transport protected eastern box turtles to Canada for illegal sale in Hong Kong.

Wan Yee Ng, 41, from Hong Kong, was arrested in June while preparing to kayak across Lake Wallace with 29 turtles wrapped in socks.
Eastern box turtles, a protected species, were intended to be sold on the Chinese black market for $1,000 each.
Ng's husband and another individual were reportedly involved, paddling towards her from the Canadian side of the lake.
The turtles were sourced from New Jersey, and Ng's cellphone data revealed plans to sell them in Hong Kong.
Ng faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with sentencing set for December.
