Zimbabwe Opposition Activist Found Dead Amid Election Campaign

The U.S. Embassy and Amnesty International call for an investigation into the death of Tapfumaneyi Masaya, marking a rise in political violence ahead of the December by-elections.

Tapfumaneyi Masaya, an activist for the Citizens Coalition for Change, was abducted while campaigning and later found dead. This is the second abduction in as many weeks targeting members of the party and the fourth homicide related to the party in a year.
The U.S. Embassy and Amnesty International Zimbabwe have called for an investigation into Masaya's death.
The opposition party has accused the ruling ZANU-PF party and security agencies of leading the harassment of its activists.
Zimbabwe is scheduled to hold by-elections on Dec. 9 to fill vacant Parliament seats.
Over a dozen more opposition lawmakers were fired Tuesday on the instructions of a man claiming to be the secretary-general of the Citizens for Change Coalition, requiring fresh elections on a date yet to be announced.
